Sigma Movie Review: Jason Sanjay's Directorial Debut Delivers Scale But Struggles With Story

Overview

Gemini said The debut of a filmmaker is always heavily scrutinized, but when that filmmaker is Jason Sanjay—son of Tamil superstar Thalapathy Vijay—the magnifying glass turns into a laser beam. Releasing worldwide on October 2, 2026, Sigma has officially landed in theaters amid immense hype, massive production values backed by Lyca Productions, and a lead cast featuring Sundeep Kishan. However, early critical consensus reveals a polarizing picture: a film that clearly understands how to command a grand cinematic scale, yet stumbles significantly under the weight of its own script. The Federal + 1 Vision, Visuals, and Technical Ambition From a purely technical standpoint, Sigma demonstrates that Jason Sanjay has inherited a sharp eye for visual framing and production logistics. The movie attempts to step into the sleek, high-stakes arena of modern heist thrillers, utilizing moody aesthetics, competent VFX work by Hariharasuthan, and crisp action choreography. Critics have noted that Jason successfully handles a multi-location canvas and extracts strong physical commitment from his actors. The ambition is loud, clear, and unmissable, proving that the young director knows how to stage a commercial set-piece. The Indian Express + 1 Where the Narrative Loses Momentum Despite the glossy exterior, Sigma hits a major roadblock in its writing room. Reviewers point out that the screenplay suffers from recycled tropes, predictable plot pacing, and logical loopholes that strain audience patience over its two-hour-and-twenty-minute runtime. While the setup introduces an intriguing underdog dynamic, the emotional core feels thinly sketched, leaving the characters stranded in a narrative loop. In a genre like the heist thriller where meticulous mechanics and sharp plot progression rule supreme, the lack of narrative depth ultimately clips the film's wings. The Federal + 2 Ultimately, Sigma functions as a classic double-edged sword for a debutant. It serves as a loud megaphone for Jason Sanjay’s technical competence and staging capabilities, even if the storytelling foundation requires heavy reinforcement. It's a trial by fire for a fresh cinematic voice—one that proves the raw materials are present, waiting for a tighter script to match. The Indian Express
